FAQ's
Can you ‘paint a pot’ at The Clay Place?
Paint a pot is great fun but not something we do here at The Clay Place. We are a
pottery studio working with clay in its raw form. We do decorate and paint our makes after we have made them. We do not provide any pre made items to paint.
There are a couple of paint a pot studios in Scarborough: Crafty Creations and Mrs
Pots Pots.
Do you allow children in the studio?
It is the most asked question, unfortunately I don’t hold the insurance to have
children in the studio. There is a lot of dangerous equipment including the kiln which
can reach 1250c. I am more than happy for a discussion about teenagers who are
interested in coming and having a go. Send me a message to just make sure.
Are you open everyday?
The Clay Place is a working studio, it is great that we have a shop front but we are
not a shop so we do not have set hours. If you are interested in popping in to have a
look round please send us an email or message.
Do you do children’s parties?
We are a working pottery studio, so unfortunately we don’t work with children at the moment.
Do you take private bookings?
Yes we do! I love to receive messages about private events (these are some of my
favourite to do!) We can come to you or you can come to you. We can hold up to 18
for a handbuilding session and 5 for a pottery wheel session. Please send a
message to discuss your requirements.
What is the difference between handbuilding and the wheel?
Handbuilding is using your hands to build something from clay, we can use different
techniques and tools but the only equipment you need is your hands.
The pottery wheel is using the ‘spinny thing’. This is using the wheel to spin the clay
whilst you manipulate the clay with your hands.
Can I bring my own food and drink?
Yes you can! I provide teas, coffee, juice and biscuits but welcome you to bring your
own. We have a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) policy on our social evenings. We
encourage you to try out local cafes and eateries too. We have Giannis next door but
one for evenings, Florios is around the corner which I can highly recomend. For
cafes in the area we have the excellent Koda on NorthWay and Eat Me in the
Stephen Joeseph Theatre.
Are you a qualified teacher?
Yes, I have a PGCE and have many years of teaching all ages. I specialised in
communication and SEN.
Can I smoke or vape in the studio?
No, but you are more than welcome to step outside for a break at any point during
any of our sessions.
If I am visiting for a half day workshop can you post my makes?
Yes, we do offer a post out service, postage costs will be worked out and charged to
you. I wrap and package as best as I can but am not responsible for any breakages
in the post.
How do I book a session or course?
All bookings go through the website, the navigation bar at the top of the website can
help you find which session or course to book.
I am a complete beginner, can I still come?
Yes beginner's are welcome to come along to any class or course apart from the intermediates handbuilding course and any masterclasses that require some previous experience.
Who are the drop in sessions for?
The drop in sessions are for people who have prior experience with clay. These are
unaided sessions, I will be around but I am not able to teach or advise in these
sessions.
Is The Clay Place accessible for wheelchairs?
The main part of the studio is wheelchair friendly, but unfortunately due to the layout
of the space the toilet wouldn’t be accessible. As an alternative, I do offer private
events so I can come to you.
Is there parking at The Clay Place?
There is on street parking on the surrounding streets which has a 2 hour limit with a
parking disc. If you don’t already have one, pop in and I can give you one. There is
also a local authority run car park on Victoria Road which is payable too.
Can I get to The Clay Place by public transport?
The train station is a 10 minute walk from The Clay Place. Just a walk along
NorthWay (You can pick up a fantastic coffee from Koda) and then turn left onto
Victoria Road and you will see The Clay Place.
